Scientific research with THEMIS

THEMIS is an infrastructure at the forefront of contemporary research in the fields of solar physics, inner planetary physics as well as solar instrumentation.   • Instrumental development in high-resolution spectropolarimetry & spectroscopy: analyzing the electromagnetic spectrum and the polarization of the light to infer multiple properties of the observed celestial body
  • Solar adaptive optics:
  • Understand solar magnetism : thanks to its spectropolarimetric capabilities, THEMIS performs magnetic field measurements of the visible light that has been polarized by the presence of magnetic field in the solar atmosphere
  • Understand solar heating : THEMIS aims to understand the coupling between different layers of the solar atmosphere and how energy is transported from the interior to the outer solar atmosphere.
  • Study and follow solar activity : THEMIS investigates transient events and dynamic processes in the Sun's atmosphere, such as protuberances, prominences, jets, flares, solar eruptions.
  • Monitor solar origin of space weather: by improving our understanding of the Sun's magnetic activity and its role in driving solar phenomena, THEMIS contributes valuable data for space weather prediction and understanding the Sun-Earth relationships.
  • Study of inner solar system objects: THEMIS offers without equivalent ground-based observational capabilities of near-Sun objects such as Mercury and comets. THEMIS's high spectral resolution can allow detailed observations of the atmospheres of Mercury and measurement of chemical compositions via spectroscopy.
